Description

An abandoned gas station stands in the silence of the Utah desert, caught in the dying light of late afternoon that tints the sky an almost unreal shade of blue. The faded canopy with its ochre and red stripes slowly collapses into oblivion, while a ghost sign looms overhead with nothing left to announce to no one. Rusted pumps, cracked concrete, skeletal vegetation on the horizon: everything here speaks of passage, of what time does to human ambitions planted in the middle of nowhere. There is in this image a distinctly American melancholy, that of roads that no longer lead anywhere, of prices displayed for vanished travelers, of color that still resists while everything else has already surrendered.
