Two dark masses rise from the lower edges of the frame, blurred and heavy, forming a kind of proscenium that pushes the viewer back and turns the scene into a view through a gap in the shadows. Beyond them, the Gothic facade glows in soft greys: a row of pointed arches with slender columns and ornate tracery, balconies of wrought iron, and a rough patch of exposed brick where the plaster has fallen away. A striped mooring pole stands at the water's edge, its black-and-white bands echoing the gondolier's shirt. The contrast is hard and sculptural, with deep blacks and luminous whites, and the water below holds only faint ripples of light. Stripped of colour, the photograph becomes a study of geometry and rhythm, the repeated arches, the diagonal of the oar and the vertical bands of the poles, in the manner of mid-century street photography and the theatrical chiaroscuro of Venetian painting.
