On the right, a grey stone facade gives way to a long colonnade of arches, their deep shadows falling across the walls like the openings of a cloister. Between them, a gondolier glides past the foot of the buildings, a small figure in striped shirt and straw hat, his red-and-white oar dipping into the green water. The surface is calm and dark, reflecting nothing but the shadow of the walls.
