From a height above the shore, this black-and-white photograph from Biarritz turns a crowded surf break into a quiet study in tone. The sky and distant hills dissolve into one soft, pale grey, so the horizon almost disappears into the mist. Across the middle of the frame, dozens of surfers sit or lie on their boards, scattered across the swell like small punctuation marks on a grey page. Some face the sea with the stillness of people who have learned to wait, while others turn toward one another, their silhouettes dark against the shimmering water. Behind them, the rolling waves gather their strength and break in soft white crests, a reminder that the calm is temporary. Without colour, the scene loses its sport and spectacle and becomes something closer to a meditation on patience, community and the passing of time.
